Configuring sales tax

Sales tax is set up in Store › Sales › Settings › Tax. Turn taxes on in the General tab first, then come here to load rates and choose how tax is calculated and shown.

Import rates by state

The fastest way to get accurate rates is Import Tax Rates by State. Add each state you collect tax in to States to Import and click Save. The rates load automatically and update themselves when a new version is published, so you do not have to maintain them by hand.

Tax options

  • Prices entered with tax. Whether the prices you type into products already include tax. Most US stores enter prices exclusive of tax.

  • Calculate tax based on. Usually the customer shipping address, which is correct for shipped firearm orders.

  • Shipping tax class. The tax class applied to shipping charges. Standard fits most stores.

  • Rounding. Leave off to round per line item, or turn on to round at the subtotal.

  • Additional tax classes. Extra classes like Reduced rate or Zero rate for products taxed differently.

How tax appears to customers

  • Display prices in the shop and during cart and checkout. Show prices including or excluding tax.

  • Price display suffix. Optional text after a price, for example "incl. tax".

  • Display tax totals. Show tax as a single total or itemized.

Editing rates manually

To adjust a specific rate, use the Standard rates, Reduced rate rates, and Zero rate rates links at the top. Each opens a table where you add or edit a rate by country, state, ZIP, and percentage.

Tip

Tax rules vary by state and change often. The state import keeps the common rates current, but confirm your obligations with your accountant or state revenue office.
